CHARACTERISTICS OF WALL ROCK ALTERATION AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE FORMATION OF IRON-OXIDE AND IRON SULFIDE ORE DEPOSITS IN MA ANSHAN AREA

Ma anshan district is geologically situated in the central part of Nanking-Wuhu volcanic basin which is an inherited basin from the preceded sedimen -tary depression of fault origin. The volcanites in this district chiefly belong to the products of the second cycle of whole volcanic activity in this basin, they are composed of explosive and subintrusive rocks, the latter are represented by gabbro-diorite porphyrite that is the mother rocks genetically rela ted to the iron oxide and iron sulfide deposits Accompanied by the iron oxide and iron sulfide mineralization there exists on a large scale hydrothermal wall rock alteration which took place chiefly in the gabbro-diorite porphyrite bodies and partially in the andesite rocks, changing them into altered rocks completely consisted of hydrothermal minerals. On the basis of mineralogical and chemical composition, the data of temperature measurement of the essential minerals, and the TiO2- and V2O5-content in magnetite, the hydrothermally altered rocks can be divided into 3 zones, each zone is made of one or more kinds of hydrothermally altered rocks. The inner zone is light colored and consists of albitites; the intermediate zone is dark colored and chiefly includes actinolite albitite, albite-mag-netite, apatite-actinolite-albitite, apatitemagnetite-diopsidite, apatite-actinolite (diopside)-magnetite and diopside-garnet-magnetite; the external zone is light colored and includes pyrite, pyriteanhydrite rocks, quartzite and argilli-te. With relation to the above zones, the zones of mineralization are given as fellows in ascending order:fine grained disseminated magnetite→medium grained disseminated magnetite→veined and massive magnetite→pyrite. The processes of mineralization-hydrothermal alteration can be distinguished into two stages: the early pneumatolytic-hydrothermal stage (including Naalteration, Na-Fe-Mg-alteration)and the late mesothermal stage. The authors speculate on that the separation of Fe from the femic rock-forming minerals during hydrothermal alteration is probably the source of Fe that formed the ore. The processes of iron ore formation are:Sodium replacement→remob-lization of Fe→the deposition of Fe in the form of magnetite.
