NAPPE STRUCTURE AND FOLDS ON NANJING-ZHENJIAHG MOUNTAIN RANGE

Nanjing-Zhenjiang mountain range in EW trend developed three-period nappe structures since Mesozoic time so that three overlap tectonic units formed-Qinglongshan-Tangshan-Lunshan allochthone in south, Zijingshan-Baohuashan-Chaofengshan allochthone in central-north and Qilingmen-Lijishan-Tingzhi authochthone between the above two. The south allochthone is of uniclinal structure with an overturned su-ccesion tilting to the south, which composed mainly of Palaeozoic Era-them and Triassic System apart from less amount of Late Jurassic ?Early Cretaceous intermediate-acidic sill, dyke and extrusive rocks; within it, the EW trend structure resulted from early-period override from south to north (J3-K1, the NNE trend structure in west rim is of nappe structural features of middle-period thrust from SEE to NWW (D2-E1). The central-north allochthone is much more complex than the south one with an exception that the overturned succession of the stra-tomasses are similar, which is regarded as a nappe structural sheet body of later-period override from north to south (E3-N). The central auto-chthone is quite simple in structure with a normal succession, and outcropped contemporaneous slump sedimentary strata of early-period nappe structure, intermediate-acidiic intrusions and extrusive rocks. The study on folds in stratomasses of Nanjing-Zhenjiang mountain range revealed that, in allochthone, the shear interlayer-gliding style of the stratified masses with an overturned succession is equal to that of the stratified masses with a normal succession. It shows that the actual interlayer-gliding features of the concentric folds that closely related to nappe structure are incongruent to the mechanism of flexural-slip, for that reason, the present paper suggests that a trundle-slip fold model in consistent with overriding on the base of single-direction shear slump should replace flexural-slip model that is in use until now. The authors found by practice, the analytical method and principles in study for folds in metamorphic rock district are also applicable to the study of folds in nappe structure district. The fold features of superposed fold in early-period could be learned by the investigation and analysis on hinges of fold and axial planes and by the subdivision of fold domain. Furthmore, the evolutionary sequence of nappe structure with different motional directions could be established through statistical correlation of axial planes and hinges of folds among each tectonic regions. The paper, with some examples of fold analysis, proves the pressence of three-period nappe structures and three different tectonic units on Nanjing-Zhenjiang mountian range developed since Mesozoic time.
