STUDY ON FOLD STRUCTURE AND MICROFABRIC WITHIN MAOSHAN NAPPE SCHISTOSE BODY

The present paper deals with the evolutionary characters of Mao-shan nappe structure by way of researching on Maoshan fold structure and the quartz optic-axial-optimum-orientation. As a first step, the authors statistically studied states, hinges as well as axis trends of the Silurian-Triassic folds of various kinds of tectonic orders and generations within the Maoshan body; and in combining with the geological developments, the authors made conclusions on variation regulations of folds at each sections and found the differences in develop states of strata with different lithocharacters and times. The stages of folds arc priliminary divided according to the stress pattern and orientation of the superposed folds; furthermore, relationship of folds with nappe structure in time-space and mechanics is made clear. Secondly, the authors mapped an optic axis maximum diagram on the base of research results of the quartz optic-axial-optimum-orientation for those orientated samples of quartzites and quartzose sandstones. The correlation between the natural samples and experimental samples is made on temperatures, pressures and the stress directions so that the forming mechanism of the quartz optic-axial-optimum-orientation as well as the relation with the nappe structure when it forming is reveal-ed. The work results could be summarized to the following points. 1 . The general deformation of Maoshan is of upper stuctural stage which was dominated firstly by brittle deformation and secondly by plastic deformation, indicating that the horse nappe is predominant since Mesozoic time; 2. The primary fold at the locality changes regularly from south to north, resulted from differential slide overriding during Mid-Yansha- ni'an time, the heterogenous expand of earth's crust during late Yansha-ian time and the shear compress of the nappe during late Yanshanian-early Himalayan time on the base of regional folding of Indosinian-early Yanshanian (T2~1 - J(1+2)); the folds suffered superposition of longitudinal buckling fold, gravitative construction and the shear compress of the nappe; 3 . The quartz optic-axial-optimum-oricntation in quartzitcs at the locality is a result of comprehensive effects by flattening mechanism of horizonal stress and flattening shearing mechanism; the slumping along the prismatic faces resulted in the modification of direction of the optic-axial-optimum-orientation; the environment of brittle deformation that favourable to the optimum orientation of quartz optic-axis indicates that the microtexture research could be taken as an approaching way to the nappe structure.
