EFFECT OF PP333 ON THE GROWTH OF THE ROOT AND ITS GORRELATION WITH THE GROWTH OF THE ABOVE-GROUND SHOOT OF RICE SEEDLINGS

Shi Tiansheng Wang Liangjiang Xu Shuying Yin Guangwen (Department of Biology)  
PP333 (Paclobutrazol or Multi-effect Triazole) is a new type of plant growth retardant. Under the condition that the rice seedlings are cultured in liquid media, the effect on the growth of the root is obviously different from that on the growth of the above-ground shoot. With the increase of the concentration of PP333, the growth of the rice seedling decreases. As to the growth of theroot, low concentration of PP333(0.05-1.0 ppm) can promote the growth of the root, but high concentration (10 ppm) will inhibit the root from growing up. It is shown in the increase and decrease of the root-shoot ratio and the variations of physiological indices. PP333 can control the growth of rice, perhaps, by affecting the growth of the root and its vigor(mineral absorption and energetic metabolism). The application of PP333 in agriculture and its application technology is dicussed, too.
