Microbial survey and its assessment of bacterial contamination of shellfish products in Zhejiang Province

The consumption of microbial contaminated shellfish products can cause food-borne diseases and even deaths and has become a great threat to consumer health and safety. Such food poison cases occur often in the coastal areas in China. In order to know the bacterial contamination status of shellfish products in the Province, 40 samples were collected from the Province and their bateria populations including total plate count, coliforms, Vibio parahaemolyticus, Listeria spp.and Salmonella were investigated. Results showed that 27 samples out of 40 samples did not meet the national regulations because their bacterial contamination was too serious, which accounted for 67.5% of the total samples. Among the unqualified samples, the most serious contamination was caused by corliforms (67.5% of the total standard-exceeding plate count), followed by Vibio parahaemolyticus (22.5%) and others (5%). No Salmonella and Listeria spp. were detected from all samples investigated.
