Studies on Porohyridium cruentum and its Applications

Wang Changhai, Li Xufeng, Ju Bao, Ou yangfan and Zhou Baicheng Institute of Marine Biochemical Engineering of Yantai University, Yantai 264005  
The unicellular red alga, Porohyridium cruentum is a primitive member of the Rhodophyta, which can synthesize a few very useful bioactive materials such as phycobiliproteins, polyunsaturated acids (PUFA), and polysaccharides. Therefore, Porohyridium cruentum has a great economic value and good market prospects. Some progress has been obtained in a few developed countries on Porohyridium cruentum culturing and development, but few researches have been made in China. The biology background, culture conditions, economic value, and development of Porohyridium cruentum are summarized in this paper.
