Research on optical resolution of DL-mandelic acid by D- (-)- phenylglycine derivates

The process is disclosed for resolving mandelic acid using optically active phenylglycine butyl ester or its hydrochloride in water or alcohol system. In this process,R-(-)- mandelic acid and S-( + )- mandelic acid are prepared, and the yield and optical purity are 98. 9% and 32% for R-(-)-mandeIic acid, 90.1% and 66.73% for S-( + )- mandelic acid, respectively. Additionally, the general synthetic methods of phenylglycine butyl ester and its hydrochloride are described.
