This paper is a systematic study of the semi-subterranean dwellings found at the Xiaomintun site in Yinxu. In contrast to typical houses built upon rammed earth foundation, such semi-subterranean dwellings appear not to be of primary form of habitation. The remains found inside such semi-subterranean dwellings are also distinctive, suggesting that their occupants might be different from the Yin people. In spite of the possibility that semi-subterranean building was of Shang's own tradition, the large aggregate of such dwellings, accompanied by distinctive domestic pottery forms, within Yinxu may indicate that their occupants were of different ethnic groups most likely coming from the west and northwest.
