Numerical Simulation of a Typical Pollution Event in Beijing and Its Surrounding Regions

In this paper, the Fifth-Generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) and the air quality model Models-3/CMAQ were combined to simulate and analyze an air pollution event in Beijing and its Surrounding Regions in October, 2002. The results show that the simulated peak value of PM10 occurred at the time coincident with the observed peak concentration. Besides the influence of Beijing local emissions, the emissions surrounding Beijing also have great effect on Beijing’s surface concentration, especially under specific weather conditions. Therefore, great importance should be attached to the pollution sources in the surrounding regions as well as in Beijing local.
