Experimental Study on Swelling Treatment of Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene Propellant

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB) propellants were swelled by using sole and mixed solvents separately,the change curves of swelling ratio with time and the mass loss after swelling treatment were obtained.The swelled propellants were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy(SEM)/energy spectrum.The results show that the HTPB propellant was only swelled but not dissolved in the presence of solvents.In the sole solvent experiments,the swelling effect in acetone is optimal.Using the mixed solvents can improve the swelling effect.The mass loss of the propellant is related to the swelling degree of the propellant and the solubility of the propellant components in solvent.The mass loss rate of the HTPB propellant swelled by tetrahydrofuran is maximum,and the ammonium perchlorate(AP) component is significantly reduced,therefore it can be used to recover AP.
