Progress of Petroleum Geology Research for the East China Sea and On Tectonic Evolution of Cenozoic Basins in the Continental Margins along the West Pacific Ocean:An Evolutional Model of Oceanwards-receding Residual Rear-arc Basins

Several great progresses have been made in researching petroleum geology of the East China Sea Basin. It has been proved that the East China Sea Basin consists of a group of epicontinental Cenozoic basins from the west to east. An entire table of Cenozoic stratigraphic subdivision to formation units in the basin shelf region has set up. The inner structures of Xihu Depression has been divided in detail. It is confirmed that coal and coal-measure sediments are the major rocks of hydrocarbon source. It is validated by drills that there are three different original types of traps in the basin. Based upon the geodynamic background formed in basins surrounding west Pacific Ocean, the west Pacific Ocean is a whole trench-arc-basin (epicontinental sea) system from north to south. Generally bounding the Taiwan Straits, the East China Sea Basin belongs to the convergent margin evolved from a transform or passive margin and the South China Sea Basin belongs to the passive margin evolved from active or convergent margin. The fact that the East China Sea is similar with the Philippine Sea Basin in space-time evolution has proved that the Cenozoic East China Sea Basin is a residual real-back basin receding oceanwards from trench.
