Sr/Ca AND Mg/Ca THERMOMETERS IN THE TROPICAL CORALS AND ITS IMPLICATION

Coral has become an important carrier in the researches of tropical oceanic environments due to its special biology and ecology characteristics. The principles, methods and applications of Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca thermometers are described in the paper. As shown in the results, the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca thermometers are not only influenced by surface sea temperature (SST) , but also by other factors such as growth rate and calcification rate of the Porites colonies. Therefore, we need to do further study on the SST thermometers in order to provide unique information and data for reconstructing the paleoenvironment and predicting climatic changes such as cooling or warming, drought or wetness and ENSO etc.
