THE EXTINCTION OF THE GENUS NEPHROLEPIDINA AND PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF THE PLIOCENE/MIOCENE BOUNDARY IN THE NORTHERN SOUTH CHINA SEA

The distribution of three-layered larger foraminifera Nephrolepidina from drill holes of northern South China Sea is introduced in the present paper. They are mainly found in three horizons, in the uppermost horizon they occur in planktonic foraminiferal Globorotalia margaritae zone (N. 18) or between planktonic foraminiferal Globorotalia margaritae zone (N. 18) and Turborotalia acostaensis zone (N. 16). The fect sugge'sts that Nephrolepidina extincts in upper miocene or to early pliocene rather than in the middle miocene as has been the customary proctice in the northern South China Sea. The problem of the pliocene/miocene boundary in the northern South China Sea is discussed here and suggeted that Globorotalia margaritae zone (N.18) occurred in all drill holes from northern South China Sea, is very rich in planktonic foraminifera and represents a deep-water environment it appears to be a largest transgretion since late Tertiary. According to the present data the it is more suitabe to put Globorotalia margaritae zone (N. 18) in the Pliocene and its base as Pliocene/Miocene boundary.
