THE MILLENNIAL-SCALE CLIMATE FLUCTUATIONS REVEALED BY THE RECORDS OF COLOR REFLECTANCE FROM ODP SITE 1144 IN THE NORTHERN SOUTH CHINA SEA

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1144 was recovered from the northern South China Sea (SCS). The age at the core depth of 517 m is about 10 MaBP. Among all the physical property measurements, the color reflectance (CR) data have the highest resolution with an average value of ~60 years (sometimes better than 10 years). Therefore, it is the ideal material for studying millennialscale climatic changes. The wavelet and cross frequency analysis has let us know that in obliquity cycles the changes of CR and those of oxygen isotope of plankton foraminifera are similar to each other and the eccentricity is dominant since 700 kaBP ago.Like GISP2 ice records of Greeland, the CR changes of the SCS also recorded the D/Olike events. The periods of 3 ka and 15 ka were revealed through the wavelet analysis of CR, which occurred not only in glacial age (such as MIS 2~4, 6, 8), but also in interglacial age (such as MIS 15, 17, 19, 25, …) and in terminal age (such as MIS 11/12, 15/16). These signals are much more stronger in glacial age than in interglacial since 700 kaBP. This not only indicates the instability of the climate throughout the glacial/interglacial cycles, but also the climate transformation in middle Pleistocene.
