CARBONATE CONTENT AND CARBON AND OXYGEN ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF SURFACE SOIL IN THE DUST SOURCE REGIONS OF CHINA

Surface soil samples were collected in the deserts and Gobi regions of China. The carbonate content and carbon and oxygen isotopic composition were analyzed. The results showed that the carbonate content of the surface soil in dust source regions of China decreased from west to east with increasing annual precipitation; and δ~(13)C values of soil carbonates also decreased with increasing annual precipitation and there was no significant tendence of δ~(18)O values. In Taklimakan desert, the carbonate content in soil samples increased with decreasing size of soil particles,but corresponding δ~(13)C values kept constant with increasing particle size. It was showed that wind erosion had no impact on the change of isotopic composition of surface soil in dust source regions. It is therefore possible to identify dust sources with carbonate content and δ~(13)C value of the dust aerosols due to their significant regional differences in dust source regions of China.
