DEEP SEISMIC DETECTION OF CRUSTAL GEOLOGIC STRUCTURE IN THE NORTH OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

In May of 1993,South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of Academia Sinica conducted comprehensive geophysical prospectings in the north of the South China Sea in cooperations with two universities of Japan.This paper only introduces something about sea floor seismographic data collecting and laboratory data processing.From the preliminary interpretations of the data processing,we know that from north to south along the NH measuring line,the sea water gets deeper and the crust becomes thinner.To the north of the measuring line,the crust thickness can be up to 25km.The upper crust with the velocity of 6—6.7km/s is about 10—15km thick,and the lower crust with the velocity of 6.5—6 8km/s is about 5—8km thick,indicating a typical continental crust.To the south of the measuring line,the crust is 10km thick,and crust with the velocity of 6 5—6 8km/s is about 5—7km thick,indicating a typical oceanic crust.At the middle of the line,exists the transitional zone (about 180km in width) where sea water becomes abruptly deeper and crust thinner,and more southwards high velocity layer in the lower crust even thins out.And in sedimentary layers and basement,there are a lot of extension faults(normal faults)found.
