PALEOENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES RECORDED BY SHANGZHOU LOESS PALEOSOL SEQUENCES ON THE EASTERN QINLING MTS.DURING THE LAST 0 6Ma

Shangzhou loess section is located at the western part of Shang Dan mountainous basin on the southern piedmont of the eastern Qinling Mts.This loess section is on the third terrace of Danjiang River bottom,with a thickness of 20m consisting of layers of loess and 6 layers of paleosol,dated at about 0 60MaB.P. The component particles of the Shangzhou loess are predominantly less than 0 25mm,with silt(0 05~0 005mm)over 65%.No particles over 0 25mm can be observed.0 05~0 01mm particles range from 43% to 53%,and 0 005mm particles remain at 26%~38%.Its main chemical composition is SiO 2 and Al 2O 3,the contents of which are about 62 82% and 15 61% respectively.An obvious characteristic of chemical component is that content of Fe 2O 3 is higher (average 5 44%),while CaO is smaller(average 1 31%).The granulometric and chemical compositions of the Shangzhou loess basically resemble those of the loess in the Loess Plateau,showing that the Shangzhou loess is also atmospheric dust sediment as the loess in the Loess Plateau. Six warm humid and cold arid climatic cycles recorded by magnetic susceptibility,granulometric and geochemical characteristics of the Shangzhou loess section on the eastern Qinling Mts.during 0 6Ma may be completely compared with the paleoclimatic records of the loess in the Loess Plateau and deep sea oxygen isotope stages,whose time period is about 0 1Ma.
