STUDIES ON MARINE HUMIC SUBSTANCES III. THE DISTRIBUTION OF HUMIC SUBSTANCES IN SEAWATER AND SEDIMENTS IN THE ESTUARY OF CHANGJIANG RIVER AND EAST CHINA SEA

Cao Wenda, Ji Minghou, Qiu Xiangquan and Han Lijun(Institute of Oceanology, Academia Sinica, Qingdao)
This paper describes the method for determining humic substances (HS) in seawater and sediments. By means of these methods, the authors investigated the quantities of HS in seawater and sediments of Changjiang River estuary and East China Sea. After comprehensive investigations from 1981 to 1983, the main results obtained are as follows.1.Concentrations of HS at the surface layer seawater of Changjiang River estuary area west of 124 E varied from 150ug/L to 435ug/L. Concentrations of HS decreased gradually from the estuary of the Changjiang River towards outer sea, and there were inverse correlations between concentrations and S.2.Concentrations of HS at the surface layer seawater of East China Sea area, east of 124 E varied from 100 ug/L to 150ug/L. Near the Ryukyu Islands concentrations of HS were below 100 ug/L.3.There are relatively close correlations between concentrations of HS in the seawater and the distribution of phytoplankton at the area of Changjiang River estuary.4.Contents of HS in the sediments from Changjiang River estuary and East China Sea varied from 0.416 mg/g to 3.371 mg/g. Contents of HS in estuary are more than 3 mg/g, which are higher than those at other areas.5.There are direct close correlations between the grain size of sediments and contents of HS.The smaller the grain size of sediments, the higher the contents of HS.
