TIDAL REGIME IN THE NANSHA SEA AREA AND ITS ADJACENT SOUTHWEST WATERS

The historical cotidal charts for the Nansha sea area and its adjacentsouthwest waters drawn by different investigators demonstrate great differences. To provide more accurate charts the harmonic constants at more than 200 tidal stations onislands and coasts are employed to construct new cotidal charts for the principalconstituents M2 S2, K1 and O1 in this area. The sum of these constituents and the relations between them are also illustrated. The tidal regimes of M2 and S2 in the Gulfof Thailand are similar, but in the Karimata Strait and Java Sea they revealsignificant difference. The M2 wave is basically of standing nature, while the S2 wavepossesses a westward propagating property. In some area, such as a part of theMakasar Strait the amplitude of S2 exceeds that of M2 The tidal regimes of K1 andO1 are also similar in the Gulf of Thailand. Both diurnal waves propagate southwardin the Karimata Strait. But in the Java Sea the O1 wave continues to propagateeastward and the K1 wave reversely propagates westward.
