Effects of spatiotemporal and environmental factors on the fishing ground of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean based on generalized additive model

Based on the catch data of purse-seine fishery of WCPO from 2000 to 2007 and the environmental data,including sea surface temperature(SST),sea surface height(SSH),chlorophyll a concentration(Chl a) derived from remote sensing,this present study analyzed the fishing ground distribution of skipjack tuna(Katsuwonus pelamis) and its relationships with the spatiotemporal and environmental factors in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean(WCPO) using generalized additive model(GAM).The results show that the rate of deviance explained about CPUE(catch per unit effort) is 64.40%,the factor that provides the largest contribution is longitude and the contribution rate is 46.27%.The CPUE of skipjack tuna is increasing with year.The fishing grounds of skipjack tuna are distributed throughout the year,but the seasonal difference is not significant,the fishing operation is concentrated in April.The fishing ground of skipjack tuna in the WCPO was mainly located in the waters of 10°S ~ 10°N and 140°E~175°E.The suitable SST ranged from 28 ℃ to 30 ℃.The suitable SSH ranged from 70 to 100 cm.The appropriate Chl a range is 0.01~0.20 mg/m3.The results of stepwise GAM show that the relative importance of the seven variables that affect the fishing ground of skipjack tuna can be followed with the order of longitude,latitude,year,sea surface height,sea surface temperature,chlorophyll concentration and month.
