Experiment on the industrial scale seedling rearing of southern flounder

Experiment on industrial scale seedling rearing of southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma was conducted from August 2006 to May 2007 in a hatchery of Nantong Minghao Fishery Co. Ltd. By controlling water temperature and light period and the nutrition reinforced conditioning of broodstock, 69% of females and 85% of males were sexually mature after 66d,and broodstock naturally spawned and the eggs fertilized in the culture ponds. Totally 8 090 ml of eggs were obtained during the spawning season, among which fertilized eggs was 1915 ml and unfertilized eggs was 6 175 ml, and the fertilization rate was 24%. Fertilized eggs was incubated at an average water temperature of 18℃, salinity 27~29, pH8.0~8.2, and embryos hatched after 50h. About 112×104 individuals of newly hatched larvae were obtained in the experiment and the hatching rate was 58.5%.A tolal of 112×104 larvae were cultured in the 18 culture ponds (totally volume of water 120m3) at water temperatures of 19~20℃(larvae culturing) and 20~22℃(post larvae)and about 30×104 juvenile fish (total length ≥30mm) were obtained after 90 days of culture, and the total survival rate was 26.8%.Average density was 1 562.5ind./m2,and albinism rate of the seedlings was less than 3%. The results showed that it was successful to achieve natural spawning and large scale seedling rearing of southern flounder by controlling water temperature and light period and the nutrition reinforced conditioning of broodstock.
