NIU Rong-li, FAN Xiao, HAN Li-jun, et al. (Institute of Oceanology , Chinese Academy of Sciences , Qingdao 266071, China)
Objective To verify the anticancer and antibacterial activity of extracts from Chinese marine algae. Methods methanol extracts of 39 species belonging to the classes Phaeo-phyceae, Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae were assayed. Results The results showed that the extracts of Gelidium amansii, Scytosiphon lomentarius and Leathesia nana show more than 80% inhibition against both cancer cells, esp. the extracts of Ccramium kondoi and Chorda filum with 90% inhibition higher; while the MIC of all extracts were over 20mg · L-1. Conclusion Chinese algae merit further investigation in anticancer activity.
