Mesoscale analysis of a very heavy rain storm process in Changhua in 2005

Using conventional observation data and intensive surface observation data,an analysis of a heavy rainfall case in Changhua on September 3,2005 is performed.The heavy rainfall results from the combination of the flagging typhoon Taili in Jiangxi province and the westerly trough in the north,as well as the effects of the outer circulation of typhoon Caidie in the east and south pacific.The terrain around Changhua also makes a favorable condition for the occurrence of the heavy rainfall.There are mountains around Changhua in the north,west and south while plains in the east.The analysis indicates that,there is a surface mesoscale convergence line appearing in Changhua affectd by the east stream of typhoon Caidie in the boundary layer and the special terrain,and then gradually developing into a mesoscale vortex,which is beneficial for the occurrence of convection.But the surface convergence converts into divergence later with the development of heavy rainfall.The convergence of the stream of Typhoon Caidie and Taili in the middle and lower troposphere intensifies the south stream.The combination of the south stream and the westerly trough in the north is beneficial for the occurrence of the convergence in the middle level in West Zhejiang.Then the convergence produces an ascending stream,which transports warm wet air upwardly,and forms a mesoscale anticyclonic circulation with the divergence stream in front of the upper trough.The effect of multi-system and multi-scale is the important reason for to the heavy rainfall in Changhua.
