By using the Ward Method, a total of 4251 accessions of the Chinesesesame (Sesamum indicum L.) germplasm collection were analysed, and among them 884 ac-cessions were selected as the candidates of a core collection. Not only the means and the co-efficients of variations for the candidates characters were similar to those for the entire col-lection, the ranges of 13 variables among 14 ones in the selection was as large as those of the variables in the entire colleciton, except the range for seed protein content in the selection was 0. 32 less than that in the entire, but also the selection included those accessions with special valuse of some characters from the entire collection. The selection basically repre-sents the genetic diversity of the entire.
