A STUDY ON INDUCTION EFFECTS OF METHYL TESTOSTERONE ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF THE CHINESE SOFTSHELL TURTLE (Trionyx sinensis)

The experiments were caried out by using two methods. First, the embryos in different developmental stages of the Chinese softshell turtle were treated by the exogenous male hormone methyl testosterone. Second, the young Chinese softshell turtles were fed with methyltestosterone 3 days after being hatched. The experimental results showed that there was no significant difference in hatching rate between the experimental group and the contrast group. This also shows that exogeneous male hormone has no effect on the hatching rate. The secondary male characteristics occurred on all individuals of the Chinese softshell turtle treated with exogeneous male hormone. For example, their thicker and longer tails were exposed out of the shell; furthermore, the treated young Chinese softshell turtles turned to be agonistic.
