The distribution and potential ecological risks assessment in water and sediment from Maliuzhou waterway in Zhuhai City

The study aimed to understand on the status of pollution by heavy metals in Maliuzhou waterway in Zhuhai City.Six stations were selected to investigate the contents and spatial distribution of heavy metals including Hg,Cd,Pb,Cu,Zn and As,as well as their potential ecological risks assessment in water,sediment and shellfish.The results showed that the average contents of heavy metals in seawater during the period of spring season were as similar as those during neap season,showing irregular spatial variation in the study area.Among all study metals,the average concentration of Hg was higher and met the quality standard of class II according to China National Standard Criteria for Seawater Quality.The average comprehensive pollution index of heavy metals in seawater during spring season(0.35)was higher than that during neap season(0.25).The average contents of Cd,Cu,As and Hg in sediment met the quality standard of class II according to Marine Sediment Quality of China,showing a wavy spatial variation in contents.Cd was found to be the primary contaminating heavy metal in sediment,followed by Hg and Cu.These metals reached strong pollution level according to pollution index,and even reached extremely strong ecological hazard level for Hg and Cd in sediments.Based on potential ecological risk index,the comprehensive pollution level of heavy metals in sediment reached high potential ecological risk level(RI=318.9).The contents of studied metals in shellfishes collected from the surveyed areas met the standard requirements with an exception of Cd and Pb reaching he quality standard of class II of marine shellfish quality in China.
