FLARE-GENERATED HELIOSPHERIC AND GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCES

ZHANG GONGLIANG;XUE SHUNSHENG;LU CHEN Institute of Space Physics, Academia Sinica, Beijing Institute of Geophysics, State Bureau of Seismology, Beijing
A statistical study of the interplanetary disturbances initiated by solar flares with im-portance ≥ 2 has further confirmed that the duration of flare is an important criterion forsignificant disturbance effect, and brightness is the principal factor determining the inten-sity of interplanetary and geomagnetic disturbances. A new important result is that amongvarious flare-generated disturbances the solar wind velocity and the interplanetary magneticfield (IMF) intensity differ completely in character of the east-west asymmetry correspond-ing respectively to that for the moderate geomagnetic disturbances with Kp=4, 5 and thestrong ones with Kp≥6. The result implies two kinds of interaction between the solar windand the goomagnetic field, i.e. the strong and the intermediate modes. The latter may becaused mainly by an increase of solar wind velocity, while the former has to be accompaniedwith an intensification of the IMF intensity, in particular, the southward component. Theeject of the bright flare generates both modes of interaction, while that of the normal orfaint one yields the intermediate mode only.
