Objective To know the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUM) and gout among residents more than 20 years old in Nanjing. Methods A stratified cluster sampling was conducted. 7 888 dwellers were investigated, and blood samples were collected for serum uric acid (SUA) level detection. Results The mean of SUA was (342.3±87.3) μmol/L in male and (252.2± 77.8) μmol/L in female in normal adults. The prevalence of HUM was 13.3%, 17.6% in male and 9.3% in female. The mean of SUA was (475.8± 53.8) μmol/L in male and ( 413.9 ± 55.7) μmol/L in female in HUM adults. The mean age in the male was 53.8 and 54.0 in the female in HUM. The prevalence of gout was 1.33%, 1.98% in male and 0.72% in female. The prevalence of gout among hyperuricemic subjects was 3.1%. Conclusions The prevalence of HUM and gout among the population in Nanjing were higher than other districts in China and the mean age of HUM had a forward tendency. It indicated that the prevalence of HUM and gout were still rising and should be paid more attention by people extensively.
