Experimental Research on Dog-bone Connection in High Steel Structures

Since the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the 1995 Hanshen earthquake, a wide variety of different moment connections have been developed, the dog bone connection was a particularly popular moment connection. Based on the experimental investigation of dog bone connections of real structure, the performance of this kind of connection under simulated earthquake load is discussed. The experimental results show that, it can improve the performance of connection by trimming portions of the beam flange near the beam column connection with reasonable dimension, which can enhance the ductility and have little influence on the stiffness and the strength of connection. Then a design method of dog bone moment connections is put forward based on this experiment research and numerical analysis.
