Effect of Dietary Insulin on the Development of Gastrointestinal Tract in Neonatal Pigs

The experiment was conducted to examine the effect of dietary insulin on the development of gastrointestinal tract in neonatal pigs.Five piglets were anesthetized and sampled within 2~4 hours after birth without suckling and used as newborn control(group N).Ten other piglets from 5 litters were randomly divided into group M(n=5),which were fed cow,and group MI(n=5),which were fed cow milk plus insulin(2.5 mg/L).The piglets of groups M and MI were artificially fed for 3 days and then anesthetized and sampled.Results showed that the small intestinal length in groups MI and M was higher(P0.01 and P0.05,respectively) than in group N.The non-mucosal weight of small intestine in group MI had the tendency to be higher(P=1.148) than in group M.The villus height of small intestine in groups MI and N showed no significant difference(P0.05).The villus heights of distal jejunum and primal ileum in group MI were higher(P0.01 and P0.05,respectively) than that in group M.The villus height/crypt depth of the small intestine in group MI was higher(P0.01 or P0.05) than that in group N.The Villus height/crypt depth of primal and distal jejunum was higher(P0.05 and P0.01,respectively) than that in group M.Collectively,we conclude from the data that dietary affects the intestinal growth and morphology.
