Effect of Ginseng polysaccharide on the proliferation and differentiation of granulocyte-monocyte progenitor cells

To study the effect of Ginseng polysaccharide(GPS) on modulation of human granulocytopoiesis and monocytopoiesis. The results indicated that ①granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, GPS markedly promoted the colony formation of CFU-GM ex vivo;②Thymocytes, splenocytes or bone marrow stromal cells conditioned media supernatant stimulated by GPS also promoted the colony formation of CFU-GM;③Thymocytes, splenocytes or bone marrow stromal cells induced by GPS expressed much more GM-CSF than that of control group. All results demonstrated that GPS directly and/or indirectly stimulated cells such as lymphocytes, bone marrow stromal cells in hematopoietic microenvironment and induced them to secrete GM-CSF and other hematopoietic regulating factors which in turn promoted the colony formation of CFU-GM. This may be one of the biological mechanisms for antianemic and regulating immunofunction of GPS.
