Study of a new type of wide-area backup protection scheme

LIN Xia, GAO Hou-lei(School of Electrical Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan 250061, China)  
A new relaying scheme for the wide-area backup protection is studied in this paper. Based on the technology of modern communication network and time synchronization, through the information sampling of the fault current and comprehensive analysis of CB status, it detects the fault area and CB operation, and provides an optimal backup protection scheme using the topology of real-time power network and the tripping function. The proposed relaying scheme can reduce fault clearance time greatly by minimizing the integer time of a backup trip without the problem of coordinating tripping time limit and tripping region in the conventional system. The scheme is evaluated with the case of a real power system.
