Progress on applications of energy storage technology in wind power integrated to the grid

Energy storage technology is one of the efficient methods to resolve the key problems in wind power integrated to the power grid, so as to enhance the ability of the grid to accept more wind power. The current problems in wind power and the causes of them are discussed briefly, and the development progress of different energy storage types and their application in wind power are concluded together. Then the progress on applications of energy storage technology in resolving the problems of wind power integrated to the grid, such as low voltage ride-through, power fluctuation, frequency control, stability, operation control, are concluded and analyzed, and the principles and focal points of the current research work are also analyzed. According to the progress discussed above, the suggestions about the interesting research directions of the next research work, such as mathmatical modeling,control strategy, optimization of position and capability, and economical operation are presented. This paper will contribute to better research and application of energy storage technology intended for improving the operation characteristics of wind power in the future.
