On Lexis and Grammar

Lexis and grammar have been treated independently by many for too long a time in both language research and language teaching. The relationship between grammar and lexis is often regarded as that between“slot and filler”. In such a model, texts are envisaged as a series of slots which have to be filled from a lexicon, and at each slot, virtually any word can occur, and the only restraint is grammaticalness. Although most linguists have now discarded this view of language, its influence on language teaching and learning is almost ineradicable. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and explore the relationship between lexis and grammar. We shall argue that lexis is grammatical, and that the meanings and structures of words are closely associated with each other. Hence, we shall put forward a proposal of learning English with words as the starting point and the use of words as the focus of attention.
