MA Guang hui (International Cooperation and Education Center,Luoyang Institute of Technology, Luoyang, Henan Prov.,471039, China)
A contrastive rhetorical analysis was made between English essays written by Chinese students and those by American students. The results of the study indicate that the mainstream sentence in Chinese students' writing is the simple sentence while that in American students' writing is the compound sentence. Chinese students use fewer attributive and adverbial clauses but more conjunctions than American students. Though some quantitative differences exist between Chinese and American students in some discourse features, there is no difference in the ordinal patterns of these features between them.
