Collocation Errors in the Writings of Chinese Learners of English

CHEN Wan-xia (Department Six, PLA University of Foreign Languages, Luoyang, Henan Prov., 471003, China)
Collocation is important for the achievement of native-like competence, but for most Chinese learners who study English as a foreign language, collocation is difficult to learn. This paper is a tentative analysis on collocation errors in compositions written by junior students at PLA University of Foreign Languages and suggests some possible reasons which cause these errors. They are: lack of motivation of collocation, misuse of synonyms, and negative transfer from mother tongue. Suggestions are then provided.
