WOUNDING PROPERTIES OF TWO TYPES OF BULLETS ON SOFT TISSUES OF DO6S

Liu YinqiuResearch Institute of Surgery, Third Military Medical College, Chongqing
Wounding effects of 5.58 and 7.62mm calibre bullets at various velocities ranging from 513 to 933m/s have been studied in 130 dogs. The injury produced by 5.56mm bullet was more extensive than that of 7.62mm bullet. This is because of the difference in ballistic behavior between the two types of bullets. The wound caused by 5.56mm bullet was characterized by a trumpet-shaped channel with large defect. The skin around the exit was torn apart leaving an irregular opening when the tumbling and the fragmentation of the bullet occurred. Highspeed X-ray photography demonstrated that temporary cavitation was much larger and lasted longer in 5.56mm bullet group. Splashing phenomenon could be seen at the exit and the fragments of the bullet could be found somewhere. The present observations indicated that kinetic energy exerted by the bullet on the tissues was the principal but not the only factor in determining the extent of the resulted wounds. Tumbling, deformation and fragmentation all contributed to the wounding effects of the inflicting missile.
