Spectral Characteristics and Heat Treatment Research of Ruby

According to the spectroscopic analysis results of ruby samples from Burma, Madagascar and China Yunnan before and after heat treatment, the main color element of ruby is Cr and Fe/Ti is the reason why ruby shows blue-violet color. After the heat treatment, 1986 cm- 1and 2123 cm- 1infrared(IR) absorption peaks produced by diaspora disappear. Burma ruby optimization process should premeditate the content of Fe. The treatment temperature is very important for Madagascar ruby optimization. The Raman spectrum demonstrates that there are different types of solid solution forming in ilmenite inclusions of Madagascar ruby with the temperature variation.The IR spectrum reveals 3310 cm-1O-H absorption peak in untreated China Yunnan ruby. The spectral changes of rubies before and after heat treatment can be considered as reliable theoretical basis for non-destructive testing of gemstones.
