Axial Compression Performance of Concrete Prisms Confined by Carbon Fiber Composite Sheets

Through axially compressed tests of 16 concrete prisms,mechanical behavior of concrete prisms confined by carbon fiber composite sheets is investigated.For a prism,the section may be divided into one effectively confined zone and four ineffectively confined zones.And there may be a descending branch in the load-deformation curve for a strengthened concrete prism if the strengthening ratio is small.Numerical calculation method of the load-deformation relationship for concrete prisms confined by carbon fiber composite sheets is developed.Comparing with the testing results,it is concluded that the proposed method is effective.Based on the numerical simulation results for 287 prisms using the proposed method,an expression of the balanced carbon fiber strengthening ratio to guaranty that there is no descending branch in the load-deformation curve for a strengthened concrete prism is proposed.
