A Study on the Regional Difference of Pension System Coverage in China

For the great pressure of population aging, the unprecedented attention has been paid on the pension system. It is of great significance to improve the system coverage which ensures the elderly will be looked after properly. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2005 to 2014, this paper classifies them into eastern, central and western regions in accordance with their economic development level. Then, according to the above mentioned three regions, the paper constructs an empirical model to analyze the factors influencing the coverage of China's pension system. The result shows that the level of economic development and the income of labor promote the coverage significantly, while the aging population impedes it. But it shows significant differences that the impact of each factor on the improvement of coverage in different regions. Therefore, it is important to expand the coverage based on the features of different regions.
