The Impact of Chinese Architecture on Chippendale Style Chinoiserie Furniture

Zhang Yingquan1 & Xu Lei2 & Sun Qi3
Chinese elements that influenced Chinoiserie furniture designed by a famous British designer,Thomas Chippendale,is researched in this thesis. It is questioned that Chippendale imitated the Chinese furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties which is approved by most of Chinese scholars. But our research shows that the argument which supports this view is far-fetched.Instead of it,the style of Chinese architecture such as windows pattern, roofs form and so on is exactly similar with the "Chinese elements" of Chippendale's Chinoiserie furniture.Further more, the reasons of Chippendale combination with Chinese architectural elements are studied, which confirms the deduction that Chinese architecture has an important influence on Chippendale's Chinoiserie furniture. And some inspiration for Chinese furniture designing is drawn from it.
