The Relationship between Freshmen's Ego-identity and College Adaptation

Objective To investigate the relationship between freshmen's ego-identity and college adaptation.Methods A total of 258 freshmen were administered with Ego Identity Process Questionnaire and College Student Adaptability Inventory.Results ①Ego-identity status from high to low were identity diffusion(32.9%),identity achievement(29.8%),identity foreclosed(20.2%),and identity moratorium(17.1%).②The exploration and commitment dimensions of ego-identity correlated with college adaptability significantly;③ANOVA analysis showed that the college adaptability was significantly different on identity status(P0.05).Identity achieved freshmen scored the highest and diffused freshmen scored the lowest.④The four dimensions of ego-identity predicted college adaptability significantly.The exploration of ideological domain existed main influences on the overall adaptability,learning adaptability and career choice adaptability(ΔR2=0.28,ΔR2=0.19,ΔR2=0.22).The commitment of ideological domain existed main influences on the self adaptability(ΔR2=0.16).The commitment of interpersonal domain existed main influence on the interpersonal adaptability(ΔR2=0.22).The exploration of interpersonal domain existed negative influence on the learning adaptability(Beta=-0.15,P0.05).Conclusion Ego-identity of freshmen influences their college adaptation.
