Chu Ci in the Political Arena in the Ming Dynasty

Nicholas L.Chan;
Throughout the Ming Dynasty(1368—1644),the comments and study of Chu Ci were often related to the political circumstances.In the first half of the dynasty,under the imperial autocracy and the prevalence of neo-Confucianism,Chu Ci Ji Zhu of Zhu Xi(1130—1200) was the only known circulating edition of Chu Ci.At the turn of the14 th century,the academic activities became more liberal,which also marked the flourishing era of the study of Chu Ci.From the background of the political arena of this dynasty,therefore,we try to explore the characteristics of the Ming scholars' study on Chu Ci.The article is divided into four parts,namely:1) the earlier period of the Ming Dynasty,2)the latter period of the Ming Dynasty,3) the last years of the Ming Dynasty,and 4) after the fall of the Ming Dynasty(with the focus on its adherents).
