Surface Pretilt Alignment of Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystal display on twisted effect requires a tilt angle between liquid crystal molecules and the surface of the substrate to avoid the formation of a striped domain texture in liquid crystal cell.In this paper,the pretilt angle was measured by the crystal rotation method. For the branchless polyimide,the pretilt angle increased with increasing rubbing strength.For the branchness polyimide,the pretilt angle of liquid crystals decreased with increasing the rubbing trength,and more than 6°of pretilt angle was obtained under weak rubbing.According to the research work,it may be claimed that the surface pretilt angle can be generated by forming the microscopic and asymmetric triangle structure formed on a substrate, where the size of these triangles are comparable to that of liquid crystal molecular length,and the steric interaction among liquid crystal molecules.
