Morphology of 5-HT immunoreactive endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of guinea-pig and man were studied using the immunogold-silver staining on paraffin sections. The results are as follows: The processes of the basal portion of some endocrine cells extend to lamina propria through the basilar membrane and there are 5-HT positive substance around the end of the processes. The 5-HT positive substance of many endocrine cells can be found to extend to luminal surface of crypt or intestinal tract, occasionally the 5-HT positive substance is found extracellularly in the gland cavity. These results indicate that the 5-HT immunoreactive endocrine cells can release 5-HT by endocrine and exocrine ways.
