ELECTROMICROSCOPIC OBSERVATION OF THE EFFECTS OF SAMARIUM CHLORIDE ON RAT ADENOHYPOPHYSEAL CELLS

The effects of samarium chloride (SmCl_3) on rat adenohypophyseal cells in vitro were studied with radioimmunoassay (RIA) and electron microscopy.The adenohypophyseal cells were exposed to 0.01 mmol/L and 1 mmol/L,of SmCl_3 respectively for 24 hours.Compared with the control,the concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and lactotropic hormone (LTH) in the supernatant were increased significantly,while the values of thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH),follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were decreased markedly.This study demonstrates that SmCl_3 exerts a stimulating effect on the synthesis and secretion of GH and LTH,and an inhibiting effect on the synthesis and secretion of TSH,FSH and LH.
