A HISTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF MUCOUS NEURONS WITHIN HUMAN SMALL INTESTINE

NADH-diaphorase positive cells, which were in close contact with GFAP (glial fibrillary acidprotein) positive cells, were observed in the small intestinal mucosa. Most of them were positive forAChE. The cell bodies appeared flat- spindle-, oval- and irregular-shaped. Most of them existed singly and only a few existed in groups of 2 cells or more. These cells were mainly located inthe lamina propria adjacent to the muscularis mucosa and some in the muscularis mucosa.
