Pattern of vascular dendritic cells distribution in early human aortic atherosclerotic lesions

Objective:To study the distribution of vascular dendritic cells in early atherosclerotic lesions of human aorta. Methods: Human arterial specimens were obtained at operation or post-mortem (n = 15). Analyses were carried out in consecutive parallel sections stained with HE and immunastaining included different combinations of antigens such as CDla and S-100. Results:Totally 13 arterial specimens showed an early atherosclerotic pathological manifestation including en-dometrium thickening and appearance of foam cells, two were normal. Among 13 specimens, 9 were detected S-100/ CDla positive (69.3% ). The S-100/CDla positive cells were mainly in the media beneath atherosclerotic lesions and in the adventitia, where they were mostly around vasa vasorum. Conclusion: There are clustering of vascular dendritic cells in early atherosclerotic lesions,distributing in the media and adventitia. Vascular dendritic cells may be involved in immune reactions in early human atherogenesis.
