Structural Evolution of Fe_(75)Al_(25) Binary System during Mechanical Alloying

The structural evolution of Fe 75Al 25 elemental powder during mechanical alloying and the effect of heat treatment at 600 ℃ on the microstructure of the ball-milled Fe 75Al 25 elemental powder were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the diffusion of Al into the Fe lattice occurs during ball milling, which results in the formation of the solid solution of Fe(Al). During ball milling, the average grain size of the Fe 75Al 25 elemental powder decreases rapidly at first (15 h), and then decreases slowly.The grain size of 6.9 nm is obtained after milling for 25 h. During the heat-treating of the milled Fe 75Al 25 elemental powder, the transition of the Fe(Al)to the DO 3-Fe 3Al intermetallics is also detected.
