Effects of Y and Nd elements on microstructure and high-temperature properties of AZ81 magnesium alloy

The effects of Y,Nd elements on the microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties of AZ81 magnesium alloy were studied.The experimental results show that addition of Y and Nd elements to AZ81 alloy result in grain refined and the amount of Mg_(17)Al_(12) phase decreased.It is considered that the addition of rear earth Nd,Y and Gd can effectively improves the tensile strength and ductility of AZ81 and AZ81 magnesium alloy due to the effects of solid*solution strengthening,precipitation strengthening and fine-grained strengthening.When the content of Y and Nd is 2%,the tensile strength of the alloy is 282MPa,39%higher than that of AZ81 without RE.At 150℃,the high temperature strength of AZ81 magnesium alloy with 1%Y is 220 MPa,40%higher than that of AZ81 without RE.
